ResNet (Student Residential Network)

Each student living on campus is provided with internet access through ResNet (Residential Network).  The network services that are offered as part of ResNet include, but are not limited to, unrestricted access to the Internet, SMARTNet, Blackboard, and free anti-virus software. Access to SMCM email through Webmail, POP3, and IMAP is also provided.  All standard operating systems are supported including Windows, Macintosh, Unix, and Linux operating systems.

Students will need the following computer equipment in order to use ResNet:
  • 10/100 Base Ethernet Network Card (NIC)
  • Ethernet Cable (Standard RJ45)
  • Power strip with surge protection
These items may be purchased at any store selling computer items, or at the SMCM Campus Store when you arrive on campus.

Campus Manager User Guide

The Campus Manager system is designed to check all computers attached to the Residential Network (ResNet) prior to receiving Internet connectivity. This new system will scan your computer the first time you connect to the Internet. Your system is scanned for possible vulnerabilities to viruses, such as Blaster, Welchia, My Doom, and Bagel. This guide shows the steps and the screens that you will see as your computer system goes through the registration process.

Note: It may take up to 20 minutes after completing each step for the network to process your information. Please be patient; if the next screen doesnt show up in an appropriate amount of time, reboot your machine.

Step 1:
Plug your computer into the network jack in your room; once your computer is powered on, launch a web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, or Firefox). The following screen will appear. If it doesn't, please wait 10 minutes and try again. If you're still having problems, take a look at the ResNet troubleshooting guide here in Word and PDF format. If necessary, please access this file before you come to campus or from one of the computer labs on campus.

SCREEN 1A

Allow this scan to complete. Timing of the scanning process will be dependent on the type of computer and the setups various programs installed on your machine, though it shouldnt take more than 15 to 20 minutes. If you cannot go beyond the scanning process, please check to make sure that all of your firewalls are turned off and any anti-virus software you have running is temporarily disabled. Also, make sure to use Internet Explorer to complete the scan process as opposed to an alternate browser, such as Firefox. Once your computer is registered and you are connected to the network, you may use any browser you want. If you are still experiencing problems completing the scan, please contact the Student Help Desk at ext. 2357.

STEP 2:

Once the scan is complete, SCREEN 2A will appear. Please follow the instructions on the screen and reboot your computer.

SCREEN 2A

If your computer failed the scanning process, SCREEN 2B will appear.

SCREEN 2B

If SCREEN 2B appears, you have possible security vulnerabilities open on your machine.

Click the link to Windows Update to download the most recent critical patches from Microsoft. Once they have been installed click the rescan link to have you computer rescanned by Campus Manager.

Step 3:

Once your computer has passed all of the tests, you will be prompted with the following screen, SCREEN 3A. Enter your SMCM network username and password (the same login and password that you use with your email account), and select what type of computer you are connecting with. You will then be prompted to reboot your machine.

SCREEN 3A

If your screen looks like the following (SCREEN 3B), your computer has been successfully scanned and registered on the network. Please reboot your computer. You are now able to surf the web.

SCREEN 3B

If, after successfully completing the scan and registering your computer, the Campus Manager attempts to scan you computer again, please call the Student Help Desk at 2357.
